whats the meaning of 1.59 for 2PM ?

2PM recently performed at K-POP Night in China, Shanghai on the 25th. The 2PM members were mobbed, as there were lots of fans waiting for them at the airport. Dozens of fans were even trying to follow them with their taxis and cars, stalking the car 2PM was riding on. What was more interesting were the thousands of fans in 2PM's performance, who were holding placards saying, "2PM=7."

When 2PM was in their prep room, they were asked if their first album's title, 1:59PM, means the missing spot of Jaebeom, which many Hottest fans are interpreting by.

The members commented, "It means that we are waiting for Jaebeom hyung. But because he isn't here right now, it couldn't be 2 o'clock." They were then asked if the album title also meant that 2PM is incomplete because of Jaebeom. Their response was, "Yes it does.

This idea came from their producer, Park Jin Young. They commented, "During our discussions with our producer Park Jin Young, he brought up the idea of 1:59PM. We thought it was a good title as we were waiting for Jaebeom hyung."

Ever since before their promotions of their title-song Heartbeat, they have been called the "beastly idols." Regarding this title, Taecyeon commented, "Originally, the word 'beastly' used on males were offensive, but because the fans gave us this name after watching our performances, we are satisfied. There is a pride in the meaning as it holds a wild masculine image." He then joked, "But after the fans recently saw our 'Heartbeat' choreography, they are now calling us 'zombie idols.'" The members commented, "The [zombie] choreography doesn't depend on acrobatics and it was an experimental performance."

Wooyoung continued, "Our bodies are like general orthopedics. We try various actions and we get hurt. The choreography that each of the members perform at the end of Heartbeat always changes. Our backs, wrists, ankles, etc - there isn't a place where it doesn't hurt."

Although 2PM has been successful in Korea as they won MAMA's Artist of the Year Award, their future success in overseas is questionable. The members commented, "Although we are getting lots of love in Korea, we are curious how the people overseas will react. It is unfortunate that we are leaving [Shanghai] on the 26th, but we will be back as a guest for the Wonder Girls' Shanghai concert."

Nichkhun was also asked about his performance at MAMA with Ivy and how she had to shut down her minihompy due to the outrage from some fans.

He commented, "During the performance with Ivy noona, I was a bit embarrassed. But I am sorry for Ivy noona. A performance is just a performance, I hope you guys look at the whole completeness of the performance itself."

Stay tuned to 2PM's guest performance on December 1st at Wonder Girls' Shanghai concert!

Kim Bum’s new movie is rated R

Kim Bum's new movie, Flight, has been claimed as a movie for an audience ages 19 and older. In America, it would be considered a rated R film.

The movie's production company said, "The rating system has decided children and teenagers can not see this movie. Because of this, all the fan girls of Kim Bum can not see the movie and they are very angry at us. They expected it to be a 15+ audience movie. We're very sorry because they've been waiting for this movie."

Since Kim Bum is such a heartthrob to teenagers, it's hard to believe he's in such an inappropriate movie. This movie hits theaters on December 3rd.a

MAMA: the credibility, the controversy and the future

Mnet's new year-end award ceremony MAMA was no doubt a success. Although the show's rating clocked in at only just over 3%, today, the entertainment section of every media outlet in Korea was plastered with pictures and stories from this controversy-filled ceremony.

While most of us have learned to focus more on special performances by artists rather than the awards themselves, the awards are still the meat and potato of the ceremony. Star-studded nominee lists, the nervous faces, drum roll getting louder, your heart beating faster, and of course, the winners holding their trophies so dearly while they thank their parents with teary smiles.

So has MAMA's distribution of major awards been understandable, or using a word that is so highly debatable, fair? Although many of the results produced hot reactions, let's objectively examine the daesang (main award) winners of MAMA 2009.

Best Song of the Year: I Don't Care

The honor of the best song of the year went to 2NE1's I Don't Care. 2NE1 is a group which can be labeled as super rookies and deserved to win the best new female artist award more than any other groups who were present. However, did I Don't Care really deserve to win the song of the year?

Going back to the 2007 MKMF, we came across a similar situation as this year's MAMA - this year, we had 2NE1 as the super rookies, and in 2007, we had world famous Wonder Girls. They had taken the nation by storm with their massive hit single Tell Me, resulting in thousands of Koreans dancing to the song and posting the video online. There was no doubt that Tell Me had become something close to a national syndrome, but the award for the best song of the year went to Big Bang's Lies and the girls ended up with the Best New Female Artist Award. Why? It has been unheard of to give one of the daesang awards to a rookie group. Even legends like H.O.T. have not achieved such a feat. The only artist who has ever won a main award as a rookie is Seo Taiji. For those who are not so familiar with him, he simply started Kpop.

Now, back to 2NE1. I Don't Care was no doubt a popular song, but it is hard to say that it was as popular as Tell Me, yet the song somehow managed to push 2NE1 to a level that nobody has managed to reach since the creator of Kpop did. The only explanation that appears to make sense is that I Don't Care was given the honor only because SNSD's massive hit Gee was not there to claim the title.

Album of the Year: Heartbreaker

More controversial than any other recipients of the awards, G-Dragon's Heartbreaker was given the honour of being titled the best album of the year. For reasons that most of our readers are already aware of, Heartbreaker has been under criticism of not only the public and figures in music industry, but also from government officials. It was also found to be inappropriate for younger audiences and was rated R.

It appears that the reason why Heartbreaker received the award was the number of sales; the album sold over 120,000 copies as of late last month, making it one of the best selling albums of the year along with Super Junior's Sorry Sorry and Seo Taiji's two albums. If the album of the year award was based solely on the number of sales, then Heartbreaker deserves it. However, one must also take other factors into consideration. Heartbreaker has been received negatively by the public and the critics for plagiarism issues, and giving such an album the honour of being named the best of the year appears to be a little out of line. The problem is that Super Junior and Seo Taiji both did not make an appearance at MAMA, making it impossible to award the title to an album that is both high in sales record and free of negative criticism. Again, SM Entertainment's boycott plays into the award.

Artist of the Year: 2PM

The Artist of the Year, while not as fiercely contested in public opinion as the other two main awards due to the sympathetic view Koreans hold regarding Jaebeom, is being debated over as well. There is no doubt that 2PM rose to immense fame - or notoriety - this year, but in order to qualify for the artist of the year award, it is implied that the artist must have made some musical achievement during the year. Has 2PM made enough musical progress to be named the artist of the year over many other talented nominees? Or, have they been given the award solely based on either the sympathy the nation feels for their loss or the drama value of them crying for Jaebeom?

Intentionally headline-grabbing award results?

If you have forgotten, MAMA had been claiming that they will have Jaebeom appear at the ceremony. Controversy is what they have been aiming for. While we're on the topic of drama value, the appearance of three TVXQ members and their acceptance speech for the award of Best Representative of Asia best represents what MAMA aims to do with this ceremony. The three members appeared to accept a seemingly meaningless award, then gave "heartfelt" lines that no news reporter would pass up if they were in their right minds. The appearance of TVXQ members had nothing to do with giving an award to artists that have contributed to the Korean music industry; it was to create more controversy and attract more attention.

As discussed above, the reason behind the credibility of MAMA being under criticism is possibly due to the fact that its uncomfortable relationship with SME stopped SME's artists from appearing at the ceremony, combined with the ceremony's focus on more controversial, attention-grabbing content rather than fair and credible distribution of awards.

So what can Mnet do in order to improve MAMA? In my opinion, MAMA should minimize or get rid of the award ceremony format and stick to what it does the best: featuring special performances. Artists have put in lots of time and effort into preparing once-in-a-lifetime stages for the fans and it is unfortunate to see them being buried by controversy and drama surrounding awards. With their credibility down to the ground, perhaps Mnet should just focus on a concert-esque celebration rather than controversial awards that result in debates and boycotts. That way, we might get to see SME artists and trot singers perform in next year's MAMA.

2009 MAMA Daesang winners

If you were up to watch the MAMA awards with many around the world, you will know that the performances were phenomenal despite the boycotting by some.

As a recap from last year, the Wonder Girls, Big Bang, and TVXQ had taken home the big awards last year, but this year's award ceremony did not follow the same route.

Why? Because SM Entertainment boycotted the whole event, that's why! Their absence meant that fans could not witness some of the music highlights and syndromes of the year, such as Gee, Genie, Ring Ding Dong, Sorry Sorry, and etc.

However, their absence led to two awards for the YG Family. Both 2NE1 and G-Dragon from YG shared the '... of the year' awards with JYP's 2PM.

2PM won 'Artist of the Year' and they stated:

"We are very happy that we received this award. Even though our leader, Park Jaebeom, isn't here, we would like to share this honor with him. We can't believe this. We are very thankful for the fans who will always be with us. There were a lot of things that happened. We give honor to those fans who have stayed and helped us."

2NE1 won 'Song of the Year' with 'I Don't Care,' and they stated:

"Thank you very much. Thank you to the people who loved 'I Don't Care.' There was a time when our members promised each other that we will get this award when we watch Big Bang receive it last year. We want to give our thanks to our boss, Yang Hyun Suk, who made us this pretty, and to the YG family."

G-Dragon won 'Album of the Year' with his 19+track Heartbreaker album, and stated:

It is awkward that I am receiving this award alone, because I have always received it as a 5-member group. But I am very happy that I am receiving it with my YG family members, 2NE1. I think a lot of things happened in the music industry, for both me and others. I hope a lot of good things will happen next year."
Yes G-Dragon, I hope more good things will happen next year. But this year was surely exciting, because who doesn't love some good drama? and i really like song of 2NE1 - I dont care :DD

KARA is the next Hallyu ?

Hallyu n. the Korean Wave, a socio-cultural phenomenon taking place across Asia. Sounds fascinating, doesn't it?

With the super-infectious love for k-pop striking the lands of China, Japan, Vietnam and many other countries, it's time for KARA to take a step overseas! Some may remember speculations regarding KARA's high potential of success in Japan, and it looks like this crossover just might happen!

KARA will be making their first step in Japan by being featured in a special video appearance on the Japanese talk show, ARASHI's Homework (ARASHI's 숙제군) on the 23rd. With the members of a famous idol group ARASHI as hosts, the show's ratings are relatively high. Now why would KARA make an appearance in a Japanese TV show when they haven't even debuted in the country yet? It turns out the show's guest, Gekidan Hitori is actually a fanboy at heart for KARA! His passion and love for the girls forced him visit the DSP Entertainment office in Japan to get a chance to actually talk to them.

KARA's representative stated,

Gekidan Hitori came to DSP's office in Japan to get the information and data about KARA. We were very thankful toward his love for KARA. Then they requested a video message of them for the show.

Gekidan Hitori had shown his interest for KARA on another show called Monkey Baby as well. For ten whole minutes, Hitori gushed about the quintet to the audience. He said,

My wife loves Korea, so I am learning the language right now. She introduced me to KARA through the internet, and I completely fell in love at first sight. It's the first time I've felt this way about a group since the Ribbon (legendary Japanese girl group). Since the internet is now well-developed, please take a look at their music video, Pretty Girl. If you have extra time, Rock U is very good too. KARA is not very known in Japan yet, so I am passing out their albums I bought myself to the people around.

KARA has already gained a tremendous amount of attention from Japan and even received a contract deal with one of the top entertainment agencies regarding their international debut. After the airing of this special episode with KARA being featured on the show, their popularity is expected to rise exponentially in Japan. Fighting, KARA!
